Report an outage

Use any of Dominion’s reporting options:

The outage map

Dominion’s outage map shows near real-time outages and estimated restoration times. Check it before you call, and check it again during a big storm; estimates change as crews assess damage.

Downed power lines

Dominion’s downed line advice:

  • Stay at least 30 feet away. Treat every downed line as energized and dangerous.
  • Call 866-366-4357 to report the location right away.
  • If it is an immediate danger to you, your property or others, call 911 first.
  • If someone touches a downed line, do not try to rescue them; call 911.
  • If a line falls on your car, stay inside if you can. If you must get out, jump clear with both feet landing together, and never touch the car and the ground at the same time.

How power comes back

Dominion restores power in order, its restoration page says. It starts with the larger transmission towers, lines and substations, then works down to the main lines and, last, the service lines to individual homes. That is why one side of a street can be lit while the other is dark.

Check your own equipment. Dominion repairs service only up to the point where it connects to your house. If storm damage runs from the weatherhead down to your meter base, an electrician must fix it before Dominion can reconnect you. Getting it done before the crew arrives saves time.

Streetlights

Report a dark streetlight to Dominion through its streetlight outage page. Write down the pole number first so the crew finds the right light.

When the power is out

  • Register for Norfolk Alert, the city’s emergency alert system, at norfolk.gov/alert, and keep spare phone chargers and a battery or NOAA weather radio, as the city recommends.
  • If a long outage comes with a storm, the city announces open shelters; see our hurricane prep guide.

Gas

Natural gas is a separate utility from Dominion Energy’s electric service in Norfolk. See our moving to Norfolk guide for the gas company and its emergency line.

What this means for you
