How inspections work in Virginia

  • No scores and no grades. Virginia does not give a number or a letter. A report lists what the inspector saw, including any violations, and the type of visit.
  • Types of inspection. The state’s records label each visit: routine, follow-up, pre-opening and others.
  • The rules. Inspectors apply the state’s Food Regulations (12VAC5-421) (PDF).
  • A report is one visit. It describes conditions on that day only. A follow-up visit after violations is routine and is not, by itself, a finding of a problem.

The Norfolk office inspects every food establishment in the city, plus hotels and motels, tattoo and body piercing studios, public pools and campgrounds, and investigates complaints about them, its page says. It also samples beach water and investigates animal bites and childhood lead poisoning.

Two recent weeks of inspections

VDH recorded 55 food inspections in Norfolk from Sept. 28 to Oct. 10, 2026, the most recent records when we checked. They covered restaurants, hotel kitchens, school cafeterias, a ballfield concession stand, caterers and coffee shops.

Bar chart of 55 Norfolk food inspections recorded Sept. 28 to Oct. 10, 2026, by type: Routine 39, Pre-opening 7, Follow-up 6, Other 3

Seven were pre-opening inspections, which is how a new food business shows up in the records before it opens. They included Senor Tequila at 169 W. Ocean View Ave., MALEK Mediterranean Eclectic Fusion at 442 Granby St., Warriors Taphouse at 2200 Norview Ave., QR Code Bar and Grill at 5018 E. Princess Anne Road and Wicked Eatz at 1101 W. Little Creek Road. See our new businesses roundup.

How to read a report

  1. Search for the business by name or street on the state inspection site.
  2. Open the most recent inspection and check its type and date.
  3. Read the violations listed and the inspector’s notes.
  4. Look back at earlier reports. One visit is a snapshot; a pattern across several visits tells you more.

If a business responds to a report, Norfolk Journal includes that response whenever we write about an inspection.

Getting sick

If you think a meal made you ill, see a doctor first. If more than one person got sick after eating the same food, the health department asks you to file a My Meal Detective report so investigators can look for an outbreak.

What this means for you

  • There is no score to check; read the violations and the date.
  • A pre-opening inspection means a new place is close to opening.
