Where to get barbecue in Norfolk: smokehouses and Korean barbecue

Norfolk’s American barbecue is spread out: Doumar’s and Redwood Smoke Shack are both just off 21st Street near Ghent, Hank’s is on Colley Avenue, and Mission BBQ is at the Lake Wright shopping area by the outlets. The city’s three Korean barbecue grills sit in Ghent on West 21st Street, on North Military Highway and on Tidewater Drive.

How we made this list. The places come from OpenStreetMap records inside Norfolk’s city limits, the same data behind our local directory, checked against each place’s own website on 2026-10-20. We added Doumar’s and Redwood Smoke Shack, found in the Virginia Department of Health inspection records, because their own sites give Norfolk addresses. Two places whose websites did not work stay on the list because the health department inspected them in 2026. We dropped one record we could not confirm. The list is alphabetical. Barbecue

Doumar’s Cones & Barbeque on Monticello Avenue is a drive-in with curb service, where trays hang on car windows. Its menu runs from barbecue and sandwiches to limeades and milkshakes, and its site says it has the world’s first ice cream cone machine, which a member of the Doumar family can demonstrate for groups.

Hank’s Filling Station on Colley Avenue has no website. The Virginia Department of Health inspected it on July 20, 2026.

Mission BBQ at the Lake Wright shopping area is the Norfolk restaurant of a chain. It closes on eight major holidays and early on six days a year, its site says.

Redwood Smoke Shack on Manteo Street serves Texas-inspired barbecue, low and slow, with brisket and ribs at the center of the menu. It also has restaurants in Virginia Beach and Suffolk, and its site says Texas Monthly named it to a list of 50 Texas barbecue joints outside Texas.

Korean barbecue

Gogi Guys Korean BBQ in Ghent asks diners to reserve a table ahead. It also takes orders for parties and catering.

HQ BBQ & Hot Pot on North Military Highway has a website that did not load when we checked. The health department inspected it on June 1, 2026.

KPOT Korean BBQ & Hot Pot on Tidewater Drive serves all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue and hot pot. Its site sets a two-hour dine-in limit, adds a gratuity for parties of six or more and charges for food left over.
